For over 35 years, artist and professor Oiva Toikka has created the Birds collection. His limitless imagination and knowledge of glass has made it possible to create small miracles of life, sought after by collectors globally. Each bird is individually mouth blown and thus unique.
The Artist:The Iittala Birds took flight in 1972 with Toikka’s small Flycatchers. Each handmade work of art is still a feat of craftsmanship with each bird being as diverse and individual as those who collect them. Oiva Toikka’s imaginative, rich and bold glass art deviates from the streamlined aesthetic of Nordic design. Toikka’s visions are still brought to life by craftsmen at the Nuutajärvi factory in Finland, where the Iittala glass workshops have always been located.
The Bird: A mesmerizing change in patterns all over this bird attests to the artistry required to create the glass birds. This swan is called the gray swan in honor of the young cygnets of that color. The sharp beak is a striking blue. Both the white and gray swans are among the largest Toikka birds. The gray whooper swan measures 13" wide by 8.25" tall.
Design Oiva Toikka 2007. Each bird is signed with the stamp “O. Toikka Nuutajärvi” as a proof of authenticity.
Made of mouth-blown glass. Please hand wash if necessary. Made in Finland.
